Meet Eric Smith, the driving force behind KTS Law Enforcement Training. With an impressive 21-year career at the Charleston Police Department, Retired Sgt. Smith brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our training programs.

Throughout his tenure, Sgt. Smith garnered numerous awards and commendations, a testament to his dedication and commitment to law enforcement. His journey within the Charleston Police Department was marked by diverse roles, reflecting his versatility and deep understanding of the field. For four years, Sgt. Smith served as an undercover narcotics detective in Charleston's Special Enforcement Unit, focusing on street-level narcotics and local hybrid gangs. During this time, he pioneered the development of West Virginia's first gang database, a groundbreaking initiative in the state.

In the Criminal Investigation Division, Sgt. Smith excelled as the Cold Case Homicide Detective, investigating over 40 unsolved homicides, demonstrating his tenacity and attention to detail. Later, he assumed the crucial role of Intelligence Officer, conducting extensive mobile forensic examinations of cell phones and analyzing over 300,000 telephone calls. His contributions proved instrumental in the investigation of 40 ongoing homicides, highlighting his invaluable expertise in the field.

Sgt. Smith's dedication to enhancing law enforcement practices led him to retire as a Sergeant in the Patrol Division in 2017, embarking on a new chapter as the head of the Department of Public Safety at the University of Charleston. In this role, he oversees the security and safety of a sprawling 23-acre campus, ensuring the well-being of more than 3,500 students and employees.

In addition to his extensive practical experience, Eric Smith is a lifelong learner. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership with a concentration in Law Enforcement and is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Strategic Leadership from the University of Charleston. His commitment to continuous education underscores his dedication to staying at the forefront of law enforcement practices and imparting cutting-edge knowledge to our trainees.
